Pharmacy Locations: Where are we now?

In the 2000s, the pharmaceutical industry began its digital transformation. The launch of PharmaML, a data exchange protocol between pharmacies and their suppliers, set in motion the transformation of an industry that had been thought to be stagnant. Twenty years later, what is the status of the digitization of business processes between pharmacists and pharmaceutical companies? It has remained virtually unchanged.

A transformation led by pharmacy groups

Yet the need is very real. Pharmacists, who spend 30% of their time in the office managing their laboratory partnerships, do not spend that time with patients at the counter.

Pharmacy groups have organized themselves and done a remarkable job of identifying pharmacists’ needs. They have developed useful in-house tools that help pharmacists manage their in-store purchases and save time. However, these solutions require constant updates, and the development costs are difficult to sustain over the long term.

And how do the laboratories stand out from one another?

Pharmaceutical companies want to improve their purchasing experience while also empowering pharmacists to handle administrative tasks independently. Their solution: the “Lab portal”. This solution fully meets the pharmaceutical companies’ specifications but generates little activity on the pharmacist’s end. Why? Pharmacists want to have access to 100% of their suppliers through a single interface.

The digitization of customer service: an example of transformation in the industry

Many startups are working to transform the industry and simplify the daily lives of pharmacists. Digipharmacie, Yoobic, and B2B marketplaces are transforming the industry across different verticals. By aligning with the needs of pharmacies and their pharmacy groups, Faks centralizes pharmaceutical companies’ customer service operations, enabling pharmacies to submit and track their claims in real time.

Isabelle Cottenye, from Bizet Pharmacy in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, tells us:

  • Do you use Faks often? If so, which features do you use most?

“I’ve been using faks every day since it launched—except for vacations, holidays, and weekends! I use it to handle supplier disputes with pharmaceutical companies on behalf of three different entities, so I rely heavily on your app.”

  • How did you handle things before? What were the challenges?

“Before Faks, I handled everything via email and phone. The problem was with follow-ups and responses. Since I’m the only one managing this aspect of the business, there’s a lot of work involved. So I couldn’t follow up or send reminders quickly enough. Faks saves me a lot of time in that regard—whether it’s updating the status of ongoing disputes or at least sending a reminder. It makes the task faster and easier.”

  • What are the benefits of a digital app like Faks?

“The benefits are having a record of everything—the fact that everything is archived, including calls, conversations, and so on. It helps keep things organized. For me, having a written record is essential, especially in our industry—we have to be beyond reproach and have an answer for everything. So when I have a dispute, I track it from start to finish. The follow-up reminders are great too, as is the new Faks computer version.”
